Day 2: Discover Prince Williams Sound
Today you’ll enjoy a full-day boat trip, photographing eagles and whales in the Prince William Sound. We board a boat which is exclusively chartered for our group. We will spend the entire day at sea at the Prince William Sound. With some luck, we will get an opportunity to observe whales, sea otters, sea lions and sea birds. The landscape and the giant glaciers will fascinate you. We will return to idyllic Whittier for another overnight stay.

Day 3: Flight to Kodiak
Today we will take a short trip to Anchorage airport for our flight to Kodiak, Alaska´s largest island. We will spend the afternoon in the surroundings of the small town of Kodiak. From 1792 to 1804, Kodiak was the capital of the former Russian colony. Nowadays, however, Kodiak is a busy fishing town. The Russian Orthodox Church and the Baranow Museum are reminiscent of the Russian period.
Day 4: From Kodiak to the Katmai National Park
Today, we will experience another great highlight of this photography tour. A seaplane will take you to our lodge in the Katmai National Park. The lodge is located on the coast and is close to the famous Hallo Bay. This is where you will spend three nights photographing the famous coastal bears and other wildlife, such as eagles, foxes and much more.

Day 5 - 6: Katmai
After breakfast, we will take a boat to observe bears and other wildlife along the coast and in the coves. Depending on the weather conditions, we will arrange for a picnic during the tour.

In the evening, depending on your preferences, you can either schedule a discussion of the photographs, or you can simply enjoy the lodge´s facilities.

June is an excellent season for bear watching in this region. Following the long winter sleep on the banks of the Katmai coast, the bears gather to feed on the protein-rich mussels. Additionally, they also appreciate the fresh green grass, which, by the way, provides a great backdrop for photographs. The wild flowers should also begin to blossom, from mid-June onwards.

Day 7: Return to Anchorage
In the morning, we resume our search for bears, before our return flight to Kodiak by seaplane. Later in the afternoon, we fly onwards to Anchorage.
Day 8: End of the Photography Tour
After breakfast, your photography tour will be concluded. You can either take your return flight home or begin your individual supplementary program.

Lodge in Katmai National Park
Our lodge is another highlight of this Alaskan photography tour and is located in the secluded wilderness in the centre of the Katmai National Park. This region is very rich in bears. The lodge offers a particularly individual and exclusive bear-watching experience. During our 3-night stay, we will go on daily bear-watching tours. A licensed captain will take you to the best sites in surrounding coves (depending on the time and tide). A boat specially designed for the lodge will take you to remote beaches.

June is the ideal season for bear-watching on the coast of the Katmai National Park. The bears are often seen excavating mussels on the beaches, or you may well get the opportunity to watch them directly from the lodge terrace. Additionally, lush green meadows, wild flowers and the impressive mountain range of the Katmai coast offer a breath-taking backdrop for bear photographs.

The cabins of the lodge are built from cedar wood. All rooms have a fully-equipped bathroom. With some luck, you may be able to watch the bears directly from the terrace. The lodge offers a cosy lounge and a dining area.

Good to know
  • Clothing: During June, the climate is pleasant and the temperatures vary from 8 to 25 degrees centigrade, depending on the region. Now of the year, the wind, the sun and the rain can alternate at any time. We therefore recommend appropriate functional clothing, according to the layer principle.
  • Participants: You will be on the trail with like-minded people who love photography and the great outdoors as well as expanding their knowledge of the art of taking pictures. The group may consist of international travellers.
  • Weather: In Alaska, the weather can be changeable. This means than in bad weather, certain activities and/or transfers (e.g. bush plane, helicopter) may be delayed, or unable to take place at all.
  • Fitness level: Your physical condition should allow you to board small seaplanes via the steps, to hike up and down mountains via rough, rocky terrain as well as over very soft tundra to reach the photographic highlights.
  • Insurance: We strongly advise you to purchase insurance for cancellation and return journey costs, which will be needed in the event of a secluded region being evacuated, a local hospital stay or return travel costs to Switzerland in an emergency. Visits to doctors and stays in hospital can be very expensive in the USA.
  • USA entry regulations: Your passport must be valid for a least 1 day longer than your return date. Upon entering the USA/Alaska, travellers must be able to prove their date of departure (onward or return flight). Please note that you can only enter the USA without a visa (for a stay of up to 90 days) if you have the new Swiss biometric passport (Passport 06). With all other passports, you require a visa.

In addition, ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) approval under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) is mandatory for all Swiss nationals and all other nationalities. The VWP allows a visa-free stay of up to 90 days in the USA/Alaska for tourism or business purposes. ESTA applications (fee as of November 2013 USD 14) can be submitted at any time prior to travel, and are valid for up to two years (with the same passport). Even if you are entering the USA/Alaska overland, the ESTA is mandatory. Questions must be answered in English. The US Department for Homeland Security requires that ESTA applications must be made at least 72 hours before the start of your trip. Register with the ESTA at https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov
*) Single rooms: strictly limited and availability must be checked. Because of the limited number of cabins and short season at our lodge in Katmai National Park it is necessary for participants to share a cabin (twin beds / same gender)

*) All flying is done “weather permitting”. Amazing Views Photo & Adventure Tours is not responsible for flights that are cancelled due to weather and/or weather delays

We reserve the right to change prices (especially due to exchange rate fluctuations)
