Photo Tour Bears Slovenia

Slovenia is a country rich in forests – as much as 60 percent of its land area is covered by forests. The most extensive forests can be found in the south of Slovenia. Because of their remoteness and sparse population, these forests are ideal habitat for numerous animal species – including bears. An estimated 500-600 brown bears live in the region.

On this photo tour Bears Slovenia you will take photos from hides for 4-5 hours in the afternoons. Chances for photographing bears are exceptionally good. In the mornings you will explore the varied and photogenic surroundings with our local guides, with enchanting gorges, mysterious caves, and idyllic lake scenery.

What our clients say

Thomas B.

The photo trip "Slovenia Autumn Colours" was my second trip with Amazing Views and certainly not my last. Jenny and Dan were always available to answer our questions with their photographic knowledge. Thanks to the small group, the support was individually tailored to the participants. Dan, the local guide, had the foresight to adjust the photo spots to coming weather conditions. For example, excellent photos were taken in the Soca Valley during a rainy afternoon. Dan led us to photo locations with the best perspective on the wild Soca and I always felt safe with him as my mountain guide. This photo trip will remain within my best memories, and I thank Jenny and Dan very much for their professional and sympathetic company.

We travelled with Amazing Views for the first time and were completely satisfied. No empty promises are made, and the focus is really on you as a customer. Dan took us to places we would hardly have found on our own. Dan and Jennifer were always there to help and advise us, and questions were answered competently. A big thank you to Jennifer and Dan.

Istria & Plitvice Lakes Croatia & Golden Autumn Slovenia, October 2021

We had great experiences with a total of 8 bears over three days - a good yield, considering that the bears do not appear at the push of a button! Thomas was a confident guide and the atmosphere among us participants was good and relaxed. Slovenianbears did a good job of organising the bear afternoons in the Hides. We had to bring the patience ourselves.... I liked the accommodation at Ana's, the food was good and plentiful. I found the excursions in the morning (underground lake, caves etc.) interesting, they gave us a good insight into the region (only the eagle owls didn't want to show up despite digital calls). There is nothing to complain about! - Bear-strong journey with AMAZING VIEWS to the bears in Slovenia!

European brown bears, September 2021

It was my first tour with Amazing Views (and not my last). As a fan of wildlife photography, I got my money's worth. It was fascinating to observe the wild bears in the wild. Thomas' technical support was a great help for me as a beginner, and the exchange with the other members of the group was also extremely helpful. The organisation worked flawlessly, be it the transport or the accommodation in a smart guesthouse. To liven up the week, we also visited a cave and were able to use our skills there under difficult lighting conditions. All in all, the week was a huge success and Slovenia with its bears is definitely worth a trip. Translated with (free version)

European brown bears, September 2021

This was my 2nd trip with Amazing Views and I enjoyed again very much. Jenny and Dan were very dedicated photo tour guides who showed us the beauties of Slovenia and always supported us to capture them with our cameras. It was a great week with nice people.

Slovenia autumn, October 2019

As an auditor / organizer I have been trained for over 20 years to find problems / errors / weaknesses, and there was absolutely NOTHING to complain! Organisation and individual support were top. A special big praise to the guide Dan for the choice of the locations and the consideration of the upcoming weather conditions. When even the photo guides Dan and Jennifer unpack their lenses, it means something.

Day 1 – Arrival to Ljubljana

There are two possibilities for individual arrival. You can fly from Switzerland or Germany to Ljubljana (please talk to us before booking a flight). Or you can drive with your own car directly to our accommodation in the south of Slovenia.
In the evening there will be a short introduction with tips and tricks for wildlife photography, especially for taking pictures from Hides.
  Fotoreise Bären Slowenien

Days 2 to 6 – Among the bears

During the morning, we will go on different excursions to photographically interesting destinations in the region. For example, you can take pictures in a great gorge, in an impressive cave or in the beautiful forests.
In the afternoon we will take a drive into the forest. After a short walk (about 10 - 20 minutes) we will reach one of the hides. Here we will wait for the bears, other wild animals, and birds. Patience is often rewarded, and you can take great pictures.
Fotoreise Bären Slowenien
During the day there is always possibilities for picture discussions or individual coaching on photography.
Coexistence of bears and people in Slovenia
An estimated 1000 bears live in the forests of Slovenia. To minimise the conflicts between bears and people living in the nearby villages, Slovenia has a long tradition of spreading a limited amount of grains in its forests. This prevents bears from searching food in the villages. The scattered food is strictly limited and is only a supplement to the food the bears seek by themselves. Some grain is scattered in front of the Photo Hides. This was done already long before the first photographers came to Slovenia.

Day 7 – End of the photo tour

We will have a relaxed morning by our accommodation and photograph the nature close by. In the garden of the accommodation there is for example a hide for bird photography. Afterwards you will be driven to Ljubljana well in advance in order to catch your early evening flight back home.

Guest House

You will stay in a comfortable and rustic Guest House, in the middle of idyllic valley. All rooms have private bathrooms with shower. Wifi is available free of charge. You will be taken care with a good full pension, with home-made food.
The hides are within 10-30-minute driving distance from our guest house. All hides are in idyllic locations and are equipped with chairs and special equipment for the attachment of tripod-head or gimbal-head.

The success rate to observe bears in the wild is remarkably high. Waiting for the bears in the photo hide requires a lot of patience. However, this is almost always rewarded.

The tour does not have special demands for physical condition. We will do short hikes to the photo locations. The Hides are usually within 10 - 20 minutes walking distance. We will walk through the forest and partly uphill. The paths are often uneven but not technically demanding.

Climate / Weather

The climate in Slovenia in September is like in Switzerland, Austria and Germany. The Slovenian Alps have a typical alpine / mountain climate. In autumn sun, clouds and rain alternate constantly.

In Slovenia payment is made in euros. Everywhere in the country there are ATMs where you can withdraw cash with your EC-Maestro-Card or credit card. Attention: our Guest House does not accept cards. Drinks, tips and other extras must be paid in cash.

Double room

Single travellers can book half of a double room. If there is no other guest who wants to share the room, the single room surcharge will apply.

We strongly advise you to purchase insurance for cancellation and return journey costs, which will be needed in the event of a secluded region being evacuated, a local hospital stay or return travel costs to your home country.
