Senja, Norway’s 2nd largest island is a wild and rugged land. Located between Tromsø to the north and the Lofoten Islands to the south, Senja remains a hidden gem compared to its more popular neighbours. With vertical peaks rising hundreds of meters above narrow fjords, high mountain passes with amazing viewpoints, quiet beaches, and no shortage of empty, narrow winding roads, Senja is a dream photographic destination.

During this week long trip we will stay in two of Senja’s most scenic destinations. The first, Mefjordvær, a quiet village surrounded by a wall of nearly impenetrable mountains that one barely needs to leave the front door to find something to photograph. Our second base in Hamn, a small harbour with open views to the north should the northern lights decide to greet us. Beyond the coastal fjords and beaches of northern Senja, we will also visit the barren mountain landscape of Ånderdalen national park, which in winter is a frozen, moon like landscape of snow and rock.

If the nights are clear, we will head out in search of the northern lights, which we will hopefully find dancing above the scenic mountain landscape.

The most beautiful impression from Senja.

Day 1 – Travel to Tromsø

After arrival in Tromsø, we will make the 4-hour drive to our first base at Mefjordvær, a small village in northern Senja. With view’s just out our cabin doors, we won’t have to go far to start shooting. And at night, we just have to look up to see if we are lucky, and the northern lights are dancing overhead.

Day 2 and 3 – Mefjordvær

Over the first few days we will explore the northern coast of Senja, with its deep, narrow fjords, vertical mountains, and scenic sandy beaches. Ersfjord, Mefjord, Husøy, Fjordgård - all names and locations you will become familiar with. We will also visit the iconic viewpoints like Tungeneset, with the tooth-like mountains of Okshornan rising in the distance or the fantastic lookout over Steinfjord.

Day 4 and 5 – Hamn

On Thursday we will move west to the scenic harbour village of Hamn. Here we will have a base to explore the western areas of Senja, including driving deep into frozen mountains of Ånderdalen national park, a surreal landscape of rock and snow in winter.

Day 6 – Tromsø

Our final night of the trip will be spent in Tromsø. If we haven’t stopped too much on drive there, then we might head out to Kvaløya for one last sunset.

Day 7 – End of photo tour

We will all head to the airport and fly home.

Accommodation

Mefjordvær

Our accommodation is surrounded by mountains in the picturesque fishing village of Mefjordvær on Senja Island. It offers brightly decorated accommodation with free Wi-Fi and a flat-screen TV. Guest rooms have a private bathroom and desk. Some also feature mountain or fjord views.

Hamn

Our accommodation is located in Hamn where there is a great possibility to watch The Northern Lights. Free WiFi access is available. You'll stay in a 2-bedroom apartment which offers 2 single/double rooms with own bathroom. Living area / kitchen on a sharing basis per apartment.

Tromsø

Overlooking the Tromsø Mountains and the city of Tromsø, our hotel offers free Wi-Fi and modern rooms with a seating area and flat-screen satellite TV. Storgata shopping street is 250 m away. All guest rooms have a work desk and tea/coffee-making facilities. Most rooms feature harbour, mountain or cathedral views. Free coffee, tea and waffles are available in the afternoon.

Weather

Due to the warm Gulf stream, the climate of the Lofoten is a lot milder than in other regions on the same latitude, like for example Alaska or Greenland. The coastal climate on the Lofoten is responsible for mild winters. Due to the windchill factor temperatures can reach -10 to -15 degrees Celsius.

Northern Lights

The winter, especially January and February, is the best time to see famous Aurora Borealis. In order to be able to photograph the Northern Lights, the sky needs to be clear. We will continuously follow the weather forecasts and in good weather conditions we will look out for the dazzling lights. The polar lights can appear at any time, but most likely between 20:00 and 01:00. The best chances are between approx. 22:00 and 23:00 (autumn/winter).

Course of action of the photo tour

The exact daily program will be put together on short notice while on location, so that we can take into consideration the current weather and light conditions. In order to capture images at the right time and with the best light during the golden and blue hour, we will be out and about especially during the times of sunrise and sunset. In between, during lunch time and in the afternoon, you will have time at your own disposal. You can relax, explore the area or participate in our photo discussion and tutorials. Upon request or if we have fantastic weather and light conditions, we can also add another photo session in the afternoon.

Sunrise / sunset

During the photo tour sunrise will be approximates between 6:00 / 6:30 and sunset between 17:15 and 17:45.

Double room

Single travellers can book half of a double room. If there is no other guest who wants to share the room, the single room surcharge will apply.

Entry requirements Norway

Swiss, German and Austrian citizens require a valid identity card or a passport. The documents must be valid until the end of the trip.

Insurance

We strongly advise you to purchase insurance for cancellation and return journey costs, which will be needed in the event of a secluded region being evacuated, a local hospital stay or return travel costs to your home country.
