Exclusive 11-days Polar Bear Expedition

Join us on this exclusive photo expedition of a lifetime. One of the largest concentrations of the world’s remaining polar bears congregates around the small town of Churchill during every year, in early to mid-fall. Hudson Bay freezes earlier in the year than any other comparable area of water in the Arctic Ocean, due to its geographical position. Polar bears that have fasted for most of the summer are eager to start hunting seals on newly formed pack ice.

In order to maximize photo opportunities, we will be working from both our exclusively chartered Tundra Buggy and 4×4 private vehicles. We visit different areas terrain-wise, and so our two means of transportations provide us with added flexibility. Our 4×4 driver-guides have special permits that allow them to enter the Wildlife Management Area.

What makes this Polar Bear photo safari extraordinary

  • Exclusive, private chartered Tundra Buggy which provides us with full flexibility and plenty of room. Each participant will have a window seat.
  • Watching and photographing polar bears in close proximity. Polar bears are extremely inquisitive and will often approach the Tundra Buggy without prompting.
  • When using 4x4s, we have special permits that will allow us to explore the back roads around Churchill and the Wildlife management Area, including the stretch along the coastal beach known as ‘Polar Bear Alley’. Photography during these days is done from ground-level outside the vehicles, but close enough to maintain safety.$
  • A good chance of seeing and photographing the evocative, awe-inspiring Northern Lights during the autumn nights and encounter other endemic species, such as Arctic foxes, red and cross foxes, Arctic hares, snowy owls, and willow ptarmigans.

New York - I would never have thought that I would be so fascinated to discover a new kind of photography in the midst of a crowd of people. To document a city in black and white under professional guidance is simply just so much fun!

Amazing Views is really worth of its name on this fantastic journey into the beauty and wilderness of Alaska! Starting with a variety of animals that we could observe, great landscapes and unique excursions...you went from one highlight to the next and when you thought: "More is not possible", the next highlight of the trip already came. Playing brown bear teenagers, who came a little bit closer, bald eagles in flight and very photogenic in the treetop, otters, seals, dolphins, whales, moose, foxes, caribous, black bears, beavers, puffins and much more we were allowed to admire and photograph in the animal kingdom. Among the landscapes, there were unique (early) morning moods, glaciers and lakes, foggy valleys and as a special gift, Mount Denali with all its splendour. And all this on land, on water and from the air. A memorable experience and a very special trip, with great people and the perfect organization and support by Thomas and Jeff! With Amazing Views anytime again. Thanks to the whole team!

Alaska had been in the back of my mind for many years because of its vast photographic possibilities. Finally it worked out and we experienced such a unforgettable journey of superlatives. During our various trips to USA and also Canada we were constantly accompanied by warning signs for moss crossing, but never got to see one. Jeff and Thomas, especially Pia, were finally able to fulfil our wish and we experienced a wonderful morning in a moose area near Anchorage and were able to take pictures of the animals at close range. An unforgettable experience that we will never forget. To go into all the other highlights would go beyond the scope here. We are grateful that we were able to experience all this at our age.

The Alaska Into the wild photo tour was fantastic. Bears, sea otters, moose, caribous and much more could be photographed at close range. The trip was not limited to wildlife and landscape photography was not neglected. Special thanks to Jeff Schultz. His knowledge, experience and helpfulness made the trip an unforgettable experience. I can only recommend this photo tour!

WOW! It was sensory overload and I'm still processing everything that I saw and experienced. I just finished doing a first look at my photos (over 12,000) and am re-living the exceptional tour. Accommodations, food, leadership and the weather (most of the time) were the best possible. So many bears and so close. Seeing all of Denali for several days was a minor miracle. Flying up to it is beyond words. How can I describe the thrill of the helicopter ride to the glaciers, the boat trip on Prince William Sound with all the wildlife we saw and its gorgeous scenery, Lake Clark with its many bears and their crazy behavior, Denali Camp with its pristine beauty, gourmet food, much wildlife and the crazy road getting there? And the group I was with became instant friends of mine who I already miss. It was a trip I'll remember the rest of my life. Thank you, Amazing Views!

Alaska - Into the wild was an unforgettable journey for me, even though I don't photograph at all. Highlights after highlights, breath-taking landscapes alternated with incredible animal encounters. We saw bears, moose, sea otters, porpoises, humpback whales....., some of them from close range. In addition, the organisation both before and on site was excellent, the accommodations were great and with Jeff Schultz we had a photographer at our side who was not only familiar with the area and always friendly and helpful, but also made many experiences possible for us through his knowledge and experience. Although I was a bit sceptical in advance if this trip is really recommendable for non-photographers, I did not regret my participation in the trip for a minute and I firmly believe that this was not my last trip with Amazing Views.

I am still completely blown away that I had a chance to experience this breath-taking, wild beauty of nature. And watching the King of the Arctic in his natural environment is the crowning glory. This trip was rounded off by perfect organisation and execution, first class food, super nice crew and really great tips from the experienced nature photographer Daisy Gilardini and Thomas from Amazing Views, who delivered a perfect all-round carefree package for me. Sorry Thomas, if I have to repeat myself again and again: THANK YOU VERY MUCH to you and Jennifer for making such trips possible!!! I would like to be part of this journey once again.

The polar bear photo safari with Daisy was a once in a lifetime wonder. Seeing a polar bear and her cubs emerge from their den and later begin their long journey to the Bay was more emotional than I expected. This was the best wildlife experience I have ever had.

I learned to appreciate Daisy very much, not only as a photographer, but also as a person. Once in a lifetime experience, got a deep insight into the polar bear family life, got to admire the polar bears and fluffy, cute cubs playing in the snow! Among the many photos there are some really great pictures, which thanks to Daisy. It was a pleasure. Thanks a lot for the great days!

Despite initial doubts about weather conditions (cold / wind) and hand baggage regulations of the US companies, the whole trip proved to be an excellent opportunity to follow & observe a polar bear mother. Thanks to the peace and quiet and support from Daisy who made that possible. The outermost cold protection suits including shoes were great. An impressive experience that will stay vivid for a long time.

The tours are always super organized by Jennifer and Thomas! I especially liked this tour, because you experience the nature of South Africa and Botswana in its unspoiled form. The animals are not on display, you have to look for them / discover them. But you get to see all the animals, up close and personal. Also, the season with occasional thunderstorms and wildflower carpets has its special charm. Absolutely recommended!

Alaska - Into the Wild was very much to our liking, it was a scenically and photographically varied trip. There is something for everyone, whether on land, from the air or on the water. Unbelievable landscapes, a fantastic sunrises and animal encounters (especially the bears) that you won't forget so quickly. Jeff Schultz is a wonderful photo travel companion; warm, calm, patient and always helpful. A really great person and perfect choice.

I had a dream, and it came true! Svalbard with Jenny and Daisy can hardly be 'topped'. The organisation- incl. consideration of my 'special handicaps' was just great. In addition, the team on board was extremely customer oriented. Thus we experienced indescribable photo events from day to day.

Philip & Barbara

The trip to Spitsbergen with its unspoilt landscape, abundance of animals and the fascinating play of lights was a matter of the heart. We were able to experience a lot on this perfectly organized trip. The accommodation on the ship was perfect and the excursion mode fully met our taste. Among the many photos there are a few great pictures, which are a joy thanks to Jenny and Daisy. Many thanks for the great days Philipp & Barbara.

Svalbard, Arctic, polar bears, glaciers, walruses, birds, and pure nature. This trip is unforgettable, but not only because of the nature, the animal and bird life and the silence and tranquillity of this area, but also because of the amazing view and One Ocean. Everything just fits: the ship, the crew, the staff of One Ocean, who left no question unanswered, were always helpful, cheerful and obliging. Especially THANKS to Jenny Brühlmann and Daisy Gilardini. Not only do they have a profound knowledge of photography and the area, they are also very good at communicating it, and they managed to turn me from a non-photographer to a proud owner of a camera and have total fun taking pictures. I have learned to appreciate both of them very much, not only as photographers and tour guides, but also as people.

Day 1 - Arrival in Winnipeg, Canada

Arrive in Winnipeg, Manitoba and transfer to your hotel (just across the street). Here you will meet the other participants and your photography guide, Daisy Gilardini. You will enjoy a welcome dinner at a nearby restaurant with the group.
2

Day 2 - Fly to Churchill

Depart Winnipeg in the morning for the 2.5-hour flight to Churchill. On arrival you will transfer to our Bed & Breakfast, where we will stay for the next 8 nights.
After lunch we will take a private photo bus tour of Churchill, with numerous stops along the way. The town of Churchill has established a “SeaWalls” art and beautification project, which features numerous colourful murals throughout the town. SeaWalls was designed to inspire people from local community to protect the world’s oceans.
The key words for any expedition to the Arctic are “opportunity” and “flexibility”. We will take advantage of every opportunity that presents itself. Part of that means being flexible, so we can maximize our photo experiences. While in town we will keep our eyes open for any wildlife encounters, which can include anything from foxes to polar bears. Each evening, if the Northern lights are dancing in the night sky, we will take the opportunity for a night-time photo session.

Day 3 - 5 - Tundra Buggy Tour

After an early breakfast served at our Bed & Breakfast, you will be transferred by bus to the Tundra Buggy launch location (roughly 20/30 min outside town) for our daily, private excursion in the tundra. You will spend the day from dawn to dusk on the Buggy, looking for bears and any other Arctic creature.
We have chartered the Tundra Buggy exclusively for our group, in order to maximize flexibility and allow each guest to have a window seat. This way, you won’t miss any shot while waiting for a window to become available. We will consume our box lunch (sandwich, fruit, energy bar etc…) in the field on our Tundra Buggy.
Scientists have identified 19 different subpopulations of bears throughout the ice-covered waters of the circumpolar Arctic. For many of these bears, the year has two seasons. Winter is the feasting season, when bears roam the pack ice, hunting seals. Summer is the fasting season, when the absence of ice pushes the bears onto land, where food is scarce.
Nestled on the shore of the Hudson Bay, Churchill, sits on the annual migration path of the polar bears, when they transition from land to sea.  Due to local river tributaries and the Churchill River itself, the bay around Churchill is mainly fresh water, and so is the first area to freeze and give the bears the hunting platform they need to catch seals, their main source of food.
Bears lead a solitary lifestyle during much of the year, Autumn is the only time of year they congregate in one place. During the long wait for the ice to freeze, sub-adults often play-fight, to test their strength and learn the skills they’ll need to survive on their own.
Every evening, after dinner, we will gather with Daisy Gilardini, your photo instructor, to download and review images shot during the day. Should the Aurora Borealis be dancing in the night sky, we will heading out at some point for a night photo session.

Day6 - 9 - 4x4 Tour

After the 3 days spent on Tundra Buggy you will now experience the bears from the ground, touring the town’s surroundings and the famous “Polar Bear Alley” by 4x4. This will give you a totally different perspective and new opportunities. We will also be able to look closely for other Arctic species.

Accommodation

Bears Den Bed & Breakfast, Churchill
We have exclusively booked the 6 rooms available in the two buildings of the Bears Den Bed & Breakfast, which have been recently totally renovated. Both building have a spacious kitchen, living/dining room and shared bathrooms.

Weather & Gear

Temperatures can range from +10° to –20° Celsius at this time of year, with the wind-chill factor to consider. It can be cold, in other words. It is recommended that you layer your clothing, as layers are easier to remove than add. Should you wish to rent any outerwear (down jackets, parkas, bib pants, winter boots, etc), you can make reservations in advance (see link on page 14).

Possibility of Bear Sightings

As we are dealing with Mother Nature, we cannot guarantee wildlife sightings. That said, we are visiting Churchill during the prime season for polar bear observation. On past expeditions, no one has left Churchill without seeing a bear at this time of year.

Single Rooms

Single rooms are very limited and only available on request. Accommodations in Churchill during polar bear season are very limited. We have secured enough rooms at the B&B for our group. Accommodation on a shared basis (double rooms).

Electricity / Power

Power in Canada is standard North American 120 V voltage with the regular North American plug (plug type A or B with two flat parallel pins). It ’s a good idea to pack a power bar and/or adaptor that will allow several chargers to recharge at the same time from a single wall outlet. Chargers draw relatively little amperage. In our experience most of our guests seem to arrive with several different types of chargers. Please note: International travellers will need voltage conversion adaptors capable of converting to 125 volts.

Food & dietary Requirements

We will try to accommodate any food and dietary requirements you may have. With that in mind, please remember that Churchill is a remote Arctic location and any special food requirements will need to be planned well in advance.

Communication / Phone / Internet

Throughout your stay you will have phone and internet connection.

Fitness Level

A minimum degree of fitness is needed when making plans to visit Canada’s Arctic North. We never leave the physical vehicle when photographing from the Tundra Buggy. You will be doing most of your shooting through the Buggy’s windows from the warmth and comfort of the vehicle’s interior. There is a terrace at the back of the Buggy where you can photograph while staying outside, if you prefer. While on the 4x4s, all photography is taken outside, alongside the vehicles. You will be shooting outside, in the elements, and so you will need to be dressed appropriately. Should we encounter other wildlife or while taking photographs of the Northern Lights, we might need to walk short distances in the night, often in snow and cold. You will need to carry your photo gear short distances from the vehicles to the shooting areas, so you need to be sufficiently fit.

Insurance

Given recent unexpected, unavoidable events around the world, we strongly advise that you purchase cancellation insurance that includes the cost of any return journey. This will be needed in the unlikely event of forced evacuation from a secluded region, a local hospital stay, and return travel costs to your home country in the event of  an emergency. Visits to doctors and stays in hospital can be very expensive in Canada for visitors and out-of-province non-residents.
