Senja autumn Photo Tour

Norway’s second largest island Senja offers a wild and rugged landscape. Situated between Tromsø in the north and the Lofoten Islands in the south, Senja is still a hidden jewel compared to its famous neighbours. Compared to the Lofoten Islands, it is still tranquil here. With its mountain peaks towering steeply over the fjords, mountain passes with wonderful viewpoints, picturesque fjords, lonely beaches, and little used winding roads, Senja is a dream destination for photographers.

In autumn, the landscape glows in golden tones for a few weeks. This makes the already beautiful scenery even more beautiful. Weather in autumn can be stormy – this leads to quickly changing light and weather moods. Fantastic colours and rainbows are no rarity. The northern lights shows up in clear nights. The temperatures are even more pleasant than in winter.

Benefit from our local know-how and many years of experience. Our photo guide Cody Duncan has been living on the Lofoten for several years and knows the Senja region as well as the local weather conditions and northern lights forecasts very well.

Northern Lights season: September – March

From mid-September to the end of March the nights are long and dark. That is the best time to see the northern lights. Meaning that already in autumn you have a good chance to see the northern lights. If the sky is clear and there is enough northern light activity, you can capture the magic lights with your camera.

Marc

Do you want to experience a great tour where you can fully concentrate on photography and experience wonderful moments? Then Amazing Views is the right one for you. On our Lofoten tour everything was perfectly organised. We were wonderfully looked after and cared for by Jenny and Cody throughout the trip. Thanks to them we were able to make the best out of the different weather conditions. As a great bonus, I was able to make wonderful new friends during this week. Conclusion: We had a wonderful time with many unique pictures....you are amazing.

Lofoten Winter’s Dream March 2022

Stephan

Rugged mountains dropping steeply to the sea, deep fjords, red, yellow and white houses - a breathtaking landscape. Our pros Mel, Cody and Sven made sure we were in the right place at the right time, despite the very changeable, challenging weather, and kept spirits high throughout.

Autumn colours Lofoten, October 2021

Gaby

Lofoten is always worth a visit, but autumn is a special season with great colours - not only in the sky in the form of northern lights. We were always guided to dreamlike, partly hidden places in the best possible light and could benefit a lot from the knowledge of Cody and Jenny. A successful week, which unfortunately went by way too fast.

Lofoten autumn colours & northern lights, October 2019

Anna

The photo trip to the Lofoten was great. Because of the individual care in a small group, everyone was able to benefit a lot, regardless of their level of knowledge. It is also ideal to be accompanied by a local guide, who can immediately adapt to the weather conditions and can always find a good spot - and of course he knows the insider tips.

Lofoten autumn colours & northern lights, October 2019

Ursula

To photograph the Lofoten in bright autumn colours, the changing moods in the morning and in the evening and the northern lights at night were simply uniquely beautiful. Jenny Brühlmann and Cody Duncan helped us with advices and tips and drove us to the very best photo locations. We could just get started and enjoy. Cody knew many special corners and spots, which produced wonderful pictures.

It guarantees that, in addition to imparting photographic knowledge, the physical well-being is also taken care of. I am and will remain a repeat offender.

The Lofoten photo tour was an impressive experience. The combination of winter landscape with mountains and northern lights is unique and very impressive. Thanks to the expert supervision of photo professional Cody Duncan, fantastic pictures are no coincidence. The perfect organisation by Jennifer Brühlmann also contributed to the success of the trip. Thank you both very much and good luck!

TOP organized trip with 2 highly motivated and talented guides, who gave everything for their clients. I am very satisfied, and I am sure I will book again! This is exactly how a photo tour should be designed. And then once a northern light up in the sky. Great!

From our initial enquiry to our return, the service from Amazing Views has been amazing. The guides’ knowledge and expertise helped us novices to get out of auto mode and produce landscape photos I’ve never had have been able to do on my own. The accommodation were both cosy and comfortable and perfectly situated. Would definitely go on another amazing views adventure

This photo tour to Lofoten has exceeded my imagination. The organisation was superb, as was the accommodation, guidance and instruction. I would very much recommend Amazing Views for any photographer wishing to experience this beautiful place.

Monald

Amazing views, the name says it all: unforgettable, impressive hotspots are targeted. The photographers help to put the objects in the right light and perspective. The trips are perfectly organized. Individual wishes are taken into account. Boredom is unknown on these trips; you are on the road day and night. Wonderful memories and great pictures are brought home.

Lofoten winter dream & northern lights, February 2019

Katharina

Once again, a trip excellently organized by Jenny! With not always easy weather, Jenny and Cody always put together a great program for the day and spontaneously adapted it to the outside conditions. Whenever possible we took pictures at known or less known places on Lofoten. Unfortunately, rain, snow and wind made this impossible on some days. We used the time for joint photo reviews of our pictures, discussed and debated the composition and development and learned a lot in the process.

Lofoten winter dream & northern lights, February 2019

Madeleine

The trip was perfectly organized from the first to the last minute. The accommodation was great, and we lacked nothing. Jennifer and Cody, our two guides, always stood by us with their great expertise and there was no question that could not be answered by them. Moreover, both of them are excellent photographers and understand their craft perfectly. We lacked nothing. This was my first photo trip with Amazing Views but certainly not my last.......I will come back 🙂

Day 1 – Arrival

After your individual travel to Norway, we will meet around noon in Tromsø. Afterwards we will travel in a comfortable minibus to our first accommodation in Mefjordvær, a small and quiet village in the north of Senja (travel time approx. 4 hours). Our accommodation is located on a beautiful spot. We can go on a motive hunt with the camera already on the first day in the near surroundings. If the weather is clear and the northern lights are dancing in the sky, we will be able to capture first pictures of this natural spectacle.

Day 2 and 3 – Mefjordvær

During the next two days you will discover the beautiful landscape of Senja's north coast. Deep, narrow fjords, steeply rising mountains and charming, lonely beaches await you. Among other things you will visit impressive viewpoints, photograph wild waves, and explore other photogenic locations.
Our photo guide Cody Duncan has been living on the Lofoten Islands for several years and knows Senja very well. The best photo spots are guaranteed.
After dinner we will look out for the northern lights - if the forecast is good.

Day 4 and 5 – Hamn

Today we will travel further west to the idyllic harbour village of Hamn. From Hamn you explore the west of Senja and visit, among other things, the Ånderdalen National Park. Look forward to wonderful fjord landscapes, endless expanses of gentle mountain peaks and an autumnal tundra in the national park.
Due to the small group size we can optimally respond to your individual needs and discuss photographic topics of your choice and put them into practice immediately (e.g. long-time exposures, use of filters, photography at night etc.). If necessary, we will also have time for picture discussions.
After returning to your accommodation and dinner we will of course look again for the northern lights.

Day 6 – Tromsø

The journey goes back to Tromsø. Depending on the weather and the daily programm, you will have an opportunity to photograph the sunset and the blue hour from a fantastic viewpoint. And who knows, maybe the northern lights will dance for us again today!

Weather

Due to the warm Gulf stream, the climate of the Lofoten is a lot milder than in other regions on the same latitude, like for example Alaska or Greenland. The coastal climate on the Lofoten is responsible for mild winters. Due to the windchill factor temperatures can reach -10 to -15 degrees Celsius.

Northern Lights

The winter, especially January and February, is the best time to see famous Aurora Borealis. In order to be able to photograph the Northern Lights, the sky needs to be clear. We will continuously follow the weather forecasts and in good weather conditions we will look out for the dazzling lights. The polar lights can appear at any time, but most likely between 20:00 and 01:00. The best chances are between approx. 22:00 and 23:00 (autumn/winter).

Course of action of the photo tour

The exact daily program will be put together on short notice while on location, so that we can take into consideration the current weather and light conditions. In order to capture images at the right time and with the best light during the golden and blue hour, we will be out and about especially during the times of sunrise and sunset. In between, during lunch time and in the afternoon, you will have time at your own disposal. You can relax, explore the area or participate in our photo discussion and tutorials. Upon request or if we have fantastic weather and light conditions, we can also add another photo session in the afternoon.

Sunrise / sunset

During the photo tour sunrise will be approximates between 6:00 / 6:30 and sunset between 17:15 and 17:45.

Double room

Single travellers can book half of a double room. If there is no other guest who wants to share the room, the single room surcharge will apply.

Entry requirements Norway

Swiss, German and Austrian citizens need a valid identity card or passport to enter Norway. The documents must be valid until the end of the trip.

Insurance

We strongly advise you to purchase insurance for cancellation and return journey costs, which will be needed in the event of a secluded region being evacuated, a local hospital stay or return travel costs to your home country.
