Photo Tour Ireland Connemara & Mayo

This photo tour takes you to the wild west of Ireland. The counties of Mayo and Galway lie in the heart of the Wild Atlantic Way and enchant with their wild beauty and unforgettable landscapes. The scenery is not comparable to other regions of Ireland and sometimes you almost feel like you are in the Faroe Islands or the Scottish Highlands. The area in the west is characterized by rough and steeply rising cliffs and mountains.

You can expect wide moorland landscapes, spectacular stretches of coast, imposing cliffs and rocky outcrops and lonely bays in County Mayo. And in Connemara, the wild hinterland of the west coast, you can discover barren plateaus, rugged mountain ranges, green meadows, wild streams and picturesque lakes.

For this Ireland photo tour, as for all our tours, we count on local know-how. Our Irish professional landscape photographer Bernard Geraghty knows the island extremely well and will guide you to the best and most beautiful photo spots, even those that are remote and still an insider tip.

Nature in Ireland demands flexibility as weather conditions can change rapidly. The program will be constantly adapted to the conditions to get the best out of each day.

What our clients say

Roland

Ireland - Kerry, Dingle & Wicklow I can highly recommend for landscape photographers. The support by Jenny and Bernard was great. Bernard, the photographer from Ireland, led us to many enchanted places that you would never find as a tourist. The visit in a rustic pub was very funny. Our group harmonized very well. Unfortunately the week was over way too quickly. We will gladly be back with Amazing Views again another time.

Beautiful destination, extremely aesthetic landscape. Due to the rapidly changing conditions, there are atmospheric shots in the morning and evening. Good small group size with different characters, was happy to get to know all of them. Top organized and personally attended by the owner. I felt that I was in the best hands. Enchantingly charming.

All good things come in threes – after experiencing Scotland, Croatia/Slovenia, this is absolutely true for the Ireland tour to Kerry, Dingle & Wicklow! Each of these areas offers something for everyone and even if two of them are very similar, they all have their own charm. If you have a guide with you who not only knows his trade, knows the country like the back of his hand, coupled with a great group of different people who nevertheless fit together very well, then the recipe for a great week in an incredibly beautiful landscape is perfect! By the way, the saying would have to be extended in this case: all good things come in threes - and even more! Ireland, Jenny & Bernard, we'll see you again, a Guiness (I'll stick to the pale ;)) on it!

An unforgettable week! The trip was excellently organized and the selection of the photo locations was very successful. As a beginner I was always supported by Jenny or Bernard in a competent, helpful and patient way and I also got many helpful tips. Many thanks for this great week in beautiful Ireland.

Perfect organisation, motivated and motivating photo tour guides with profound knowledge of the place, comfortable vehicles with sufficient storage space, nice and like-minded fellow travellers - this is exactly how an optimal photo tour is designed.

Ireland, the "green island", fascinated me with its breath-taking landscapes. I could not get enough of the many facets of the green colour, the steep cliffs, the picturesque lighthouses and the countless sheep pastures. In short: My memory card was glowing... The perfect organisation and supervision by Jenny and Bernard made this trip an unforgettable, instructive and entertaining experience. A big thank you for the great trip.

Philipp

The variety of landscapes and the pure nature in the north of the island was very impressive and offered countless photo motives. I was not only fascinated by the beautiful landscapes, but also by the energy, passion and great commitment of the two photographers/guides Jennifer and Bernard. Thanks to their professional planning and organisation we were able to photograph/explore the beautiful locations of the region under the best possible weather and light conditions. We experienced so much during this week, time flew by. Even as an ambitious photographer I was able to learn a lot and always felt as in good hands. It was simply fun. Thanks a lot!

Day 1 – Arrival to Ireland and travel to the West

Individual travel to Ireland. We will meet you at the airport during the morning. Afterwards we will drive west to County Mayo in Belmullet with a comfortable van.
Already on the first evening you will visit one of the many highlights of this photo tour. You will take pictures from one of the most striking vantage points with views of majestic surf cliffs and imposing rock needles washed by foaming waves.
Due to the small size of the group, we can optimally respond to your individual needs and discuss photographic topics of your choice and immediately put them into practice (e.g. long exposures, use of filters, etc.).

Day 2 – Achill Island

In the morning you will photograph sunrise on a spectacular cliff. More than 250 meters high cliff walls rise here above the floods of the Atlantic Ocean. Afterwards you return to the hotel where a delicious breakfast awaits you.
After breakfast the journey continues south to Achill Island. Achill Island is Ireland's largest island and one of the highlights in County Mayo. The landscape is characterized by lonely bays. High mountain slopes fall dramatically into the sea. Next to it wide moors and small villages are waiting for you.
Today you can take a picture of the sunset from another impressive viewpoint. This offers you practically a 360-degree view of Achill Island.

Day 3 and 4 – Westport - a first immersion in the Connemara

Today we leave early again to photograph the sunrise at a picturesque bay.
Afterwards we will travel on to the small town of Westport where we will stay for two nights. You will be enchanted by the small town in County Mayo. Here you will experience the typical Irish hospitality, photogenic small streets, colourful houses and much more.
From Westport we will visit the first highlights of the Connemara. In addition to the breath-taking coastline, the landscape in this region includes mountains, lakes, small villages, woolly highland sheeps and a fascinating mountain scenery.
Photograph fascinating motives in a lonely valley in a hilly landscape and a deserted, beautifully situated lake. The nature in the Connemara will inspire you. Already the famous writer Oscar Wild described the Connemara as "in every way magnificent" and "a savage beauty".

Day 5 and 6 – Clifden - in the heart of the Connemara

The next destination is Clifden, the unofficial capital of the Connemara. From here you will explore the heart of this natural paradise.
Among other things you will visit an enchanting lake in the middle of a peat bog landscape. In the middle of the lake is a small island, which is covered with pine trees. Another highlights are various enchanting waterfalls and rapids, which pours down a hidden valley in several cascades. A magical place that reminds a bit of the Fairy Pools in Scotland, but without tourists. You can look forward to numerous hidden jewels and delicacies. Here you are still away from the (photo) tourist streams.

Day 7 – Galway

In the morning we will go out into the nature again for another photo session.
Later we will drive to the last destination of the photo tour, to the beautiful city of Galway. Galway is the capital of the county of the same name and is one of the most beautiful cities in Ireland. The student city is known for its cosy pubs, quaint pubs, and winding alleys with old houses. Galway is the perfect place to end the photo trip and enjoy "The Real Irish Experience" in one of the many lively pubs. In Galway the Irish culture is especially cultivated. The Gaelic language, Irish dance and Irish folk music are still present everywhere.

Day 8 – End of the Photo Tour

Today the photo tour to Ireland ends. You will be driven in time from Galway to Dublin Airport (travel time approx. 2.5 hours)

Accommodation

During the photo tour to Ireland you will stay in good hotels that offer all amenities. As the weather in Ireland can sometimes be a bit unstable, we have deliberately chosen hotels that ensure a pleasant stay even on a "rainy day".

Belmullet

You will stay overnight in a beautiful, family-run 4-star hotel in the centre of the small town of Belmullet. The hotel has 21 beautiful, stylish rooms with Wifi, kettle, an espresso machine, hair dryer, safe and more. The hotel also offers a nice bar with 2 fireplaces and a particularly good restaurant.

Achill Island

This charming, family-run hotel overlooking a sandy beach and the Atlantic Ocean offers a well-known restaurant and a traditional pub. The rooms are equipped with bath/shower, WC, hairdryer, TV, telephone and tea/coffee making facilities.

Westport

Our hotel is situated about 10 minutes’ walk outside Westport on a hill. From the hotel you can enjoy a wonderful view over the sea and the sacred mountain Croagh Patrick in the distance. The hotel offers an award-winning restaurant, bar, garden and spa with jacuzzi, sauna and steam room. The large rooms have bath/shower, WC, hairdryer, TV, telephone, safe and tea/coffee making facilities.

Leenaun

In Leenaun you will stay overnight in Ireland's oldest guesthouse right by Killary Fjord. The family-run hotel serves fresh fish from the sea and vegetables from its own garden. All rooms are individually decorated in traditional style. The hotel is an ideal starting point for excursions into the Connemara. Facilities include a bar, a large restaurant and a lounge.

Galway

Stylish and recently refurbished boutique style hotel in the heart of Galway. Within walking distance of the hotel is Eyre Square, some of Galway's best bars and pubs, narrow streets and the shopping district. The rooms are equipped with TV, shower/WC, WLAN, hairdryer and tea/coffee facilities. The hotel also has an immensely popular Bar & Gin Parlour.

Weather

The Irish weather is always bit of a surprise. Sun, clouds and rain always alternate. Perfect for photography! The temperatures vary between 14 and 18 °C in Autumn. September is considered a mild, moderate month.

Physical Condition

The tour does not make any particular physical demands. We will take short hikes to the photo locations. Individual photo locations may be a little exposed. However, if you are afraid of heights there is always the possibility to take pictures from a little further back.

Procedure photo trip

The exact day's programme will be put together on site at short notice to consider the weather and light conditions. In order for you to be able to take pictures at the right time with the right light in the golden and blue hours, we will be outdoors especially at sunrise and sunset. In between, during noon or in the afternoon, you will have free time to rest a little, explore the surroundings or, if you wish, take part in picture reviews and tutorials. If you wish or if fantastic weather and light moods arise, we can also include another photo session in the afternoon.

Double room

Single travellers can book half of a double room. If there is no other guest who wants to share the room, the single room surcharge will apply.

Entry requirements Ireland

Swiss, German and Austrian citizens need a valid passport or a valid identity card for stays up to 3 months. Swiss citizens are on equal footing with EU citizens and can carry out passport control at the specially designated EU counter.

Insurance

It is strongly recommended that you take out insurance to cover cancellation costs as well as return travel insurance, which in an emergency covers evacuation, local hospitalisation, and the cost of returning to Switzerland.
