Lofoten Autumn Photo Tour

Autumn is the best kept secret of the Lofoten Islands. Only for a few weeks, the landscape is shimmering in soft golden hues, increasing even more the beauty of the scenic views of the famous mountain panorama. Of course, the weather can already be stormy in autumn, which leads to fast changing but spectacular light and dramatic weather impressions. During clear nights, the Northern Lights will appear in the sky. The temperatures are much more pleasant in autumn than in winter.

The nature of the Lofoten requires flexibility, as the weather conditions change constantly. The itinerary of the tour will be continuously adapted to the current conditions in order to get the best out of every day.

At night, if the skies are clear and the weather forecasts good, we will of course be looking for and chasing the dancing lights of the beautiful aurora borealis.

When to see polar lights: September to March

The nights are long and dark from end of September until end of March. This is the best time to see the Northern Lights! If the sky is clear and the aurora active, chances are big to witness these magical lights.

What our clients say

Fabian

Thanks to Jenny and Cody, despite the bad weather, we were always in the place where the sun provided a great lighting atmosphere for a short time. Jenny and Cody are a great team who took everything off our hands so that we could concentrate on taking pictures. The tips and tricks on image composition and editing were also very valuable. I can highly recommend the photo trip to Lofoten with Amazing Views. I look forward to the next photo trip with you.

Lofoten Winter’s Dream March 2022

Stephan

Rugged mountains dropping steeply to the sea, deep fjords, red, yellow and white houses - a breathtaking landscape. Our pros Mel, Cody and Sven made sure we were in the right place at the right time, despite the very changeable, challenging weather, and kept spirits high throughout.

Lofoten is always worth a visit, but autumn is a special season with great colours - not only in the sky in the form of northern lights. We were always guided to dreamlike, partly hidden places in the best possible light and could benefit a lot from the knowledge of Cody and Jenny. A successful week, which unfortunately went by way too fast.

The photo trip to the Lofoten was great. Because of the individual care in a small group, everyone was able to benefit a lot, regardless of their level of knowledge. It is also ideal to be accompanied by a local guide, who can immediately adapt to the weather conditions and can always find a good spot - and of course he knows the insider tips.

To photograph the Lofoten in bright autumn colours, the changing moods in the morning and in the evening and the northern lights at night were simply uniquely beautiful. Jenny Brühlmann and Cody Duncan helped us with advices and tips and drove us to the very best photo locations. We could just get started and enjoy. Cody knew many special corners and spots, which produced wonderful pictures.

From our initial enquiry to our return, the service from Amazing Views has been amazing. The guides’ knowledge and expertise helped us novices to get out of auto mode and produce landscape photos I’ve never had have been able to do on my own. The accommodation were both cosy and comfortable and perfectly situated. Would definitely go on another amazing views adventure

Amazing views, the name says it all: unforgettable, impressive hotspots are targeted. The photographers help to put the objects in the right light and perspective. The trips are perfectly organized. Individual wishes are taken into account. Boredom is unknown on these trips; you are on the road day and night. Wonderful memories and great pictures are brought home.

Lofoten winter dream & northern lights, February 2019

Katharina

Once again, a trip excellently organized by Jenny! With not always easy weather, Jenny and Cody always put together a great program for the day and spontaneously adapted it to the outside conditions. Whenever possible we took pictures at known or less known places on Lofoten. Unfortunately, rain, snow and wind made this impossible on some days. We used the time for joint photo reviews of our pictures, discussed and debated the composition and development and learned a lot in the process.

Madeleine

The trip was perfectly organized from the first to the last minute. The accommodation was great, and we lacked nothing. Jennifer and Cody, our two guides, always stood by us with their great expertise and there was no question that could not be answered by them. Moreover, both of them are excellent photographers and understand their craft perfectly. We lacked nothing. This was my first photo trip with Amazing Views but certainly not my last.......I will come back 🙂

Day 1 – Travel to the Lofoten

You are individually travelling to Leknes/ Lofoten Islands. There are good flight connections from Oslo with SAS or Wideroe. Your arrival at the airport in Leknes should be before 14:00h. Upon your arrival you are picked up and transferred by minivan to your accommodation in Reine. Reine is a very quaint village. Should the light be suitable during the transfer, we are already stopping for first photo opportunities and visit the beaches of Myrland and Storsandnes. Check in to our Rorbuer accommodation sometime in the late afternoon.
2

Day 2 and 3 – Out and about in the west of the Lofoten Islands

We are spending 2 full days in the west part of the Lofoten. Here we are visiting and photographing scenic villages and landscapes and of course some of the well-known and most beautiful beaches. Weather permitting, we lead you every morning to a scenic spot in order to shoot memorable pictures of the sunrise. The day will be spent travelling to various magnificent locations in order to shoot the autumn scenery of the Lofoten Islands in the best possible light.
Since our professional photo guide Cody Duncan has been travelling the Lofoten for many years and has been living there recently, we can guarantee you that you will be able to visit the very best photo spots in the area.
After each dinner we drive – providing good weather forecasts – to one of the beautiful beaches and wait for the dazzling Northern Lights to appear in the night sky.

Day 4 to 6 – Let’s go East

After a last early morning photo shooting in the area of Reine, we head into the eastern part of the Lofoten Islands. You check in to your new accommodation. During the next few days, we are visiting and shooting various very scenic and photogenic beaches, all located in a most spectacular area.
Due to the small size of the group, we are able to focus on your individual needs and requirements in the best possible way. You have the opportunity to discuss with us photographic topics of your personal choice and immediately put them into practice. These topics could be for example the technique of long exposure photography, the use of photographic filters, and/or night-time photography. We also have time for individual image discussion and photo feedback. On short hiking trails we reach the best locations in the late afternoon for a stunning view of the sun setting behind the mountain range. Upon return to our accommodation and after dinner we are of course looking out further for more Northern Lights.

Day 7 – End of the photo tour

After a last photo session in the morning you are transferred to the airport of Leknes for your journey back home. The flights to Oslo leave around midday or early afternoon.

Accommodation

The Lofoten Islands are well known for their old fishing cottages called “Rorbuer”. The Rorbuer cabins have been renovated and were changed into modern accommodation for travellers. During your photo tour you will be sleeping in these charming Rorbuer cabins.

Reine

In Reine you are spending the night in fisherman’s cottages situated on the island of Hamnøy. The cabins are equipped with 2 rooms, a kitchen and a shared bathroom. The Rorbuer are furnished in country home style and provide a cozy living room with a lounge and dining area. From the cottages you have lovely views of the harbour of Hamnøy, the Vest-Fjord, the Reine-Fjord or the mountains.

Ballstad

Our Lodge is located in a real fisherman's area, where ambient oozes of history and a great view to the harbour. Fishermen cottages ("rorbu") surrounds the area and hereby you are settled in a authentic fisherman village. The buildings are newly rebuild with modern high standard in all facilities where you can take the pulse of Lofoten's charm and tradition, while enjoying modern comfort.
All units have modern bathrooms with heated tile floors for perfect comfort, great beds and an authentic atmosphere.

Northern Lights

Already in autumn there are very good chances to see the famous aurora borealis. In order to be able to photograph the Northern Lights, the sky needs to be clear. We will continuously follow the weather forecasts and in good weather conditions we will look out for the lights. The aurora borealis can appear at any time, but most likely between 20:00 and 01:00. The best chances are between approx. 22:00 and 23:00 (autumn/winter).

Weather

The climate of the Lofoten is due to the warm Gulf stream a lot milder than in other regions on the same latitude, like for example Alaska or Greenland. The coastal climate on the Lofoten is responsible for mild winters and relatively cool summers. In autumn the weather can be very inconsistent. During this time of the year, storms and a lot of clouds are often possible. But especially these changing weather conditions can be very exciting for the landscape photographer. Fantastic light situations come into life and the images obtain immediately a more dramatic mood.

Clothing

The weather conditions on the Lofoten can be very inconsistent. In October, wind, sun, rain and even sometimes snow can occur. The average temperature in October is around 5 – 8 degrees. We are therefore recommending breathable and functional clothing in various layers „onion stlye“. The clothing should transport humidity and sweat to the outside and keep you dry inside without losing the warmth of the body. Equally important are well worn hiking boots with a good sole. A rain jacket and possibly also rain trousers are necessary for rainy conditions. It is worthwhile to also pack long underwear, gloves, beanie, scarf and well isolated shoes with woollen socks.

Course of action of the photo tour

The exact daily program will be put together on short notice while on location, so that we can take into consideration the current weather and light conditions. In order to capture images at the right time and with the best light during the golden and blue hour, we will be out and about especially during the times of sunrise and sunset. In between, during lunch time and in the afternoon, you will have time at your own disposal. You can relax, explore the area or participate in our photo discussion and tutorials. Upon request or if we have fantastic weather and light conditions, we can also add another photo session in the afternoon.

Sunrise / sunset

During the photo tour sunrise will be around 08:00 and sunset around 17:45.

Double room

Single travellers can book half of a double room. If there is no other guest who wants to share the room, the single room surcharge will apply.

Insurance

We strongly advise you to purchase insurance for cancellation and return journey costs, which will be needed in the event of a secluded region being evacuated, a local hospital stay or return travel costs to your home country.
