Senja, Norway’s second largest island offers a wild and rugged landscape. Senja is located between Tromsø in the north and the Lofoten Islands in the south and is still a hidden gem compared to its famous neighbours. The island is a photographer’s dream destination with its mountain peaks rising steeply above the fjords, mountain passes with wonderful viewpoints, secluded beaches and winding roads with little traffic.
Of course, the hunt for the Northern Lights is on the program every clear night and with the corresponding aurora forecasts.
Benefit from our local expertise and many years of experience. Our photo guide Cody Duncan has lived in the Lofoten Islands for several years and knows the Senja region as well as the local weather conditions and northern lights forecasts inside out.

Do you want to experience a great trip where you can fully concentrate on taking photos and experiencing wonderful moments? Then Amazing Views is the right place for you. Everything was perfectly organised on our Lofoten trip. Jenny and Cody looked after us wonderfully throughout the whole trip. Thanks to them both, we got the best out of the most varied weather conditions. As a great bonus, I was able to meet some wonderful new colleagues during the week. To summarise: we had a wonderful time with lots of unique pictures....you guys are amazing.
Thanks to Jenny and Cody, despite the bad weather we were always in a place where the sun provided a great lighting mood for a short time. Jenny and Cody are a well-rehearsed team who took care of everything for us so that we could concentrate on taking pictures. The tips and tricks on image composition and editing were also very valuable. I can highly recommend the photo trip to the Lofoten Islands with Amazing Views. I'm looking forward to the next photo trip with you.
The name ‘Amazing Views’ was the programme and true in every respect. From the announcement and organisation of the trip, to the choice of accommodation, the tour guide and the choice of locations, everything was perfect. Of course, the weather and the chosen time of the trip in autumn played a major role. And they went perfectly with the impeccably organised photo tour. The size of the group was very pleasant and allowed everyone to be looked after according to their individual needs. The tour participants' suggestions and wishes were also taken into account. I can recommend a photo tour with Amazing Views to the island of Senja in autumn in every respect, although basic photographic knowledge and a good level of physical fitness are an advantage.
You travel to Norway individually. We meet in Tromsø around midday. You will then travel in a comfortable minibus to Mefjordvær, a small and quiet village in the north of Senja (travel time approx. 4 hours). Our accommodation is beautifully situated and the perfect base from which to discover Senja. On the first day, we are able to hunt for motifs in the nearby surroundings with our camera.
If the weather is clear today and the Northern Lights dance in the sky, we will be able to capture the first images of this natural spectacle.
Over the next few days we will explore the beauty of Senja. You take wonderful pictures of deep, narrow fjords, vertical mountains, and scenic sandy beaches. Ersfjord, Mefjord, Husøy, Fjordgård – all names and locations you will become familiar with. We will also visit the iconic viewpoints like Tungeneset with the tooth-like mountains of Okshornan rising in the distance or the fantastic lookout over Steinfjord.
In the west of Senja, you will visit the Ånderdalen National Park, among others. Look forward to wonderful fjord landscapes and surreal winter scenes in the national park.
Our photo guide Cody Duncan has lived on the Lofoten Islands for several years and also knows Senja inside out. The best photo spots are guaranteed. Thanks to the small group size, we can cater to your individual needs and discuss photographic topics of your choice and put them into practice straight away (e.g. long exposures, use of filters, photography at night, etc.). If necessary, we will also have time for image discussions.
After dinner, we will keep an eye out for the Northern Lights – if the forecast is favourable.
The journey today takes you back to Tromsø. Depending on the weather and the day’s program, you will have the opportunity to catch the sunset in Kvaløya. And who knows, maybe the Northern Lights will dance for us again today!
The photo tour ends today after breakfast. Individual journey home or onward journey.
Our hotel is surrounded by mountains in the picturesque fishing village of Mefjordvær on the island of Senja. It offers bright and nicely decorated rooms with free Wi-Fi and a flat-screen TV. The rooms have a private bathroom and a desk.
The hotel is located in the center of Tromsø next to the harbor and the airport express bus terminal. Free coffee, tea and fresh waffles are offered in the afternoon. The modern rooms have a fantastic view of the Arctic Ocean Cathedral, Tromsø’s local mountain or the city center. All rooms are equipped with bath or shower, WC, hairdryer, minibar and coffee/tea maker.
We will put together the exact daily program on site at short notice in order to be able to respond to the respective weather and light conditions as well as the aurora forecasts. The program will be flexible in order to maximize the potential for fantastic photos. If the weather and light play along, you will be out and about, especially at sunrise and sunset. The hunt for the Northern Lights will also be organized according to weather conditions, Northern Lights forecasts and solar activity.
Thanks to the warm Gulf Stream, the climate in northern Norway is much milder than in other regions at the same latitude, such as Alaska or Greenland. The coastal climate makes for mild winters. However, due to the wind, temperatures can drop as low as -10 or -15 degrees Celsius. The weather can also be very unstable in winter. At this time of year, you can often expect stormy weather or lots of clouds. However, it is precisely these changing weather conditions that can be extremely exciting for photographing landscapes. Fantastic lighting moods are created and the shots immediately become more dramatic. Thanks to the rapidly changing weather, there are always windows of cloud even when the sky is overcast, which increase the chances of seeing the Northern Lights.
Winter, especially January to March, is the best time of year to see the Northern Lights. For us to be able to photograph the Northern Lights, the sky must be clear. During the photo tour, we will regularly monitor the forecasts and keep an eye out for them if conditions are good. The Northern Lights can appear at any time, but most often between 7pm and 1am. Our local professional photographer, Cody Duncan, is very knowledgeable about the Northern Lights forecast and local weather conditions. So far, our guests have been able to marvel at and photograph the Northern Lights on every Northern Norway photo tour.
The trip is not physically demanding. However, you should be fit enough to take part in short hikes to the photo locations (approx. 5 – 45 minutes depending on the location). In winter, the photo locations are sometimes reached via frozen ground, deep snow and/or stones. We recommend using spikes or ice claws on your shoes for a better grip.
Single travellers can book half of a double room. If there is no other guest who wants to share the room, the single room surcharge will apply.
We strongly advise you to purchase insurance for cancellation and return journey costs, which will be needed in the event of a secluded region being evacuated, a local hospital stay or return travel costs to your home country.
