Puffins are very photogenic. With their colourful beaks, contrasting plumage and expressive eyes, these cute birds are a special photo opportunity.
There are only a few places in the northern hemisphere where you can see and photograph these animals up close during the summer months. One of the very best destinations for photographing puffins is in the south of Wales. On a small island, thousands of puffins, guillemots, razorbills and many other fascinating bird species breed every year. And all this happens right in front of your lens.
On this photo tour, you will spend the night in accommodation steeped in history, which was built by the famous conservationist Ronald Lockley. This accommodation is located in the centre of the action and offers the unique privilege of taking great photos from morning to night. The island is still an insider tip, so you will share it with only a few other visitors.
The photo trip is aimed at ambitious nature photographers who would like to spend a week immersing themselves in the world of puffins and return home with exceptional pictures.
Do not miss out on this special adventure. Join us to the puffins in South Wales for an unforgettable wildlife experience.

Travelling to North Wales in November is a daring combination. But for a photographer it was a paradise, we had extreme weather but also just as much luck. The capricious weather resulted in great moods and excellent pictures. For me, it was a great and successful trip. Superbly organised and with Jenny and Nick two guides who led us through all situations and to the most beautiful spots. It was nice that we only stayed in one hotel. This made travelling more relaxed as we didn not have to pack again and again. Conclusion: a successful trip, great pictures, pleasant acquaintances.
Fancy a photo detour to an abandoned slate mine? (A little strenuous, but very interesting.) Or would you prefer a filigree cast-iron pier as a photo subject? (Opened in 1878 and no less than 376 metres long.) Are you interested in windswept lighthouses? Or rather a mighty castle from the 13th century? The very varied photo tour "Wales and Snowdonia" has it all. On top of that, there is a diverse landscape to marvel at, babbling brooks, and, and, and. I really appreciate the fact that I learnt a lot thanks to the always patient and professional photographic support. A big thank you for all the suggestions and tips, especially to Jenny, but also to Nick. Photography is fun!
On arrival at Cardiff Airport, you will be met in the arrivals hall. You will then drive for around two hours to the south-west of Wales.
You will spend the night in a hotel in Milford Haven. You will end your first day of travelling with dinner together.
After breakfast, check out of the hotel. The bus will take you to the harbour. From here, the journey to the island takes around 30 minutes.
After arriving on the island, you will check into your room. You will then be given an introduction by the island wardens. They explain the most important rules and procedures on the island and introduce you to the best photo spots.
In the afternoon, we set off for the first time in search of puffins in the magnificent natural landscape. With a bit of luck, you will be able to take your first beautiful photos.
The next few days are all about photography and enjoying the beautiful natural surroundings. Your accommodation is close to the best photo spots, which are all within a 5-10 minute walk.
Due to the small group size, we can optimally respond to your individual needs and discuss photographic topics of your choice and immediately put them into practice. We will also have time for image discussions or tutorials on image processing.
After breakfast, you will check out of your accommodation. The boat will take you back to the mainland. We continue by bus to Milford Haven for an overnight stay.
We bring the intensive week of photography to a cosy close and have enough time for debriefing and a final dinner together.
After breakfast and check-out, the coach will take you back to Cardiff Airport. The photo tour ends here and you start your individual journey home or onwards.
You will stay in a comfortable mid-range hotel in a central location in Milford Haven. The accommodation is approx. 20 minutes’ drive from the harbour. The rooms offer everything you need for a comfortable stay. The bathroom is equipped with a shower. Wifi is available. The hotel has a fitness centre, a restaurant and a bar.
On the island, you will spend the night in the old accommodation, which is steeped in history. This accommodation gives you the unique privilege of taking great photos of the marvellous birdlife from morning to night. The accommodation is simply furnished and offers practically only double rooms. Each room has a washbasin with running water of drinking quality. Hot water is always available after sunny days. There are no showers on the island. The accommodation has a kitchen. You will be catered for by our team during your stay.
Sockets are available in the island’s own library for charging camera batteries, mobile phones and laptops. Mobile internet is available in some corners of the island from the mainland (no wifi). The most important photo spots are all within a 5-10 minute walk from the accommodation.
You will receive a recommendation for the flights in good time before the trip. Due to weather/tide and wave conditions, departure from the island to the mainland may be delayed by one day. We recommend that you choose a fare that can be changed when booking your flight. We recommend that you allow for an extra day before boarding the aircraft.
The weather on the island is always good for a surprise. Sun, clouds and rain often alternate. In particular you often have to reckon with a lot of wind. Perfect for photographing the animals in beautiful and exciting light moods. When travelling, we expect temperatures between 15 and 25°C during the day, cooling down to 10-15°C at night.
Due to the frequent weather changes, you definitely need to be prepared for all eventualities. We therefore recommend breathable functional clothing using the onion principle, which transports perspiration to the outside without losing heat and dries quickly.
Well-worn, waterproof hiking boots with appropriate tread soles are recommended. The meadows can often be damp. You should always carry a rain jacket and rain trousers in your rucksack so that you can react quickly if the weather changes.
It is also worth taking a swimming costume for the really hardy. Swimming in the 12°C cold sea surrounded by seals is a refreshing experience.
There are no restaurants on the island. Our accommodation offers a kitchen and you will be catered for by our team with breakfast and dinner as well as a small snack/lunch for lunch. There is a small self-service shop on the island, which is stocked with sweet drinks, chocolate bars and crisps, depending on availability. You must bring your own alcoholic drinks or other food.
You will need to bring your own sleeping bag and towel for the simple accommodation on the island in a dreamlike location surrounded by birdlife. Alternatively, you can also bring a duvet cover (90cm mattress and duvet). Before and after your stay on the island, you will enjoy a fully equipped hotel room including a private bathroom/shower in Milford Haven.
You have a good basic level of fitness to be able to take part in moderate hikes to the photo locations. The paths on the island can be somewhat uneven, rocky or boggy in places.
We do not have a fixed programme. Rather, we are guided by the weather and of course the good light at sunrise and sunset, visit the various colonies and live out our passion and creativity.
During the photo tour, the sun will rise at around 4.45 am and set at around 9.30 pm.
With a few exceptions, all rooms on the island are double rooms. The double room is shared with a traveller of the same gender. We have no influence on the allocation of rooms. If you are allocated a single room by chance, there is no single room surcharge.
We strongly advise you to purchase insurance for cancellation and return journey costs, which will be needed in the event of a secluded region being evacuated, a local hospital stay or return travel costs to your home country.
