On this photo tour you go to discover Montenegro, considered as a jewel on the Mediterranean. The Balkan country has been independent since 2006. The coast of Montenegro measures 300 kilometres and the rest of the country’s surface belongs to the mountains. In this pretty little pearl between the Adriatic Sea and the mountains, you will find a varied and indescribable beauty away from the masses. Unspoilt nature, crystal-clear water on the Adriatic, beautiful lakes and spectacular mountains await you here.

The well-known highlights of the country are the fjord-like Bay of Kotor and the Durmitor National Park. On this tour, however, we also take you to insider spots that are usually only visited by locals. Our local guide knows the best photo locations in Montenegro and will take you to the right place at the best time.

My third trip with Amazing Views in the meantime. As in 2019 and 2023, expectations were exceeded. Wild bears at short distances, sometimes as a mother-child group, sometimes as a single bear is not just a photographic experience. It was also worth sitting for a long time. The hides with prepared camera shots and a good field of vision make photography easy, especially after the first briefing after arriving in a bird hide. Special praise is due to the tour guide, who was always approachable and flexible. We will definitely be back!

Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrival

Arrival at Podgorica airport and transfer to the hotel near Kotor. In the evening there will be a first photo session in Kotor. Afterwards a welcome dinner with the group.

Day 2 – The bay of Kotor

In the morning, you will take photos in Kotor and have the opportunity to climb the town wall to enjoy a fantastic view. Afterwards, time at leisure.

In the afternoon, visit the town of Perast in the Bay of Kotor. After a boat trip to the island of Lady of the Rocks, dinner in a local restaurant.

Day 3 – From Kotor to Durmitor National Park

After breakfast, we leave Kotor behind and take the scenic route north to Durmitor National Park. First, stop in Perast to take advantage of the morning light illuminating the ancient town and islands.

Then you leave the coast and head into the mountains. In the afternoon you reach the quiet town of Žabljak and check into our hotel. In the evening, during the golden hour and sunset, capture first impressions with the camera of the mountains in Durmitor.

Day 4 – 6 – On the road in Durmitor National Park

We have two full days to explore Durmitor National Park and its surroundings. You will visit the Black Lake, one of the photographic highlights of the park, as well as some of the more hidden mountain lakes.

In the scenic surroundings, you will take your time to enjoy the breath-taking mountain views. Weather permitting, you will also visit some viewpoints above the Tara Canyon. It is considered the largest canyon in Europe and is one of the most spectacular canyons in the world.

Day 7 – End of Photo Tour Montenegro

After breakfast, transfer to Podgorica airport for your individual journey home or onwards.

Alternatively, you can continue to the start of the photo tour Slovenia. You have two options for this: Drive with our photo guide to Slovenia and stay overnight on the way or fly from Podgorica to Ljubljana, with overnight in Ljubljana.

Accommodation

Sveti Stefan

The hotel is in a quiet location and offers a wonderful view of Sveti Stefan and the sea. The beach is just a few minutes’ walk away. The spacious rooms have been recently renovated for a comfortable stay. They have a private bathroom and are equipped with a TV, seating area and air conditioning.

On the terrace of the restaurant you can sit under olive trees and enjoy local cuisine with local specialities, as well as a wide range of Mediterranean and international cuisine.

Durmitor National Park

The hotel is located a few kilometres from Zabljak on the way to the world-famous Tara Bridge. The hotel is designed in a traditional mountain style that conveys a homely atmosphere. It is surrounded by unspoilt nature, meadows and mountains.

The rooms are comfortably furnished and offer a private bathroom, seating area, TV and minibar. In the konoba (restaurant), guests can enjoy traditional specialities from Montenegro, prepared from local, fresh ingredients gathered only in the Durmitor area. A bar and a small wellness centre with hot tub and sauna in the hotel garden are among the other amenities.

The accommodation may be changed due to availability, for same or better standard.

Photo tour itinerary

We will put together the exact daily program on site at short notice in order to be able to deal with the respective weather and light conditions. In order to capture images at the right time and with the best light during the golden and blue hour, we will be out and about especially during the times of sunrise and sunset. In between, during lunch time and in the afternoon, you will have time at your own disposal. You can relax, explore the area or participate in our photo discussion and tutorials. Upon request or if we have fantastic weather and light conditions, we can also add another photo session in the afternoon.

Climate / Weather

The climate in Montenegro in October is similar to Switzerland, Austria and Germany. In autumn, sun, clouds and rain always alternate and it can be cooler. Especially in the mountains there is a typical alpine/mountain climate, and the weather can change very quickly under certain circumstances. Temperatures in October in Montenegro average between 6 and 20°C.

Fitness level

The trip is not particularly physically demanding. However, you should be fit enough to take part in moderate hikes on the local hiking trails. Some photo locations may involve hiking uphill.

Clothing

This photo trip is outdoor orientated and we will spend a lot of time outdoors in nature. We recommend sturdy and well-worn hiking boots as well as appropriate outdoor clothing in layers and rainwear.

Half double room

Single travellers can book half of a double room. If there is no other guest who wants to share the room, the single room surcharge will apply.

Insurance

We strongly advise you to purchase insurance for cancellation and return journey costs, which will be needed in the event of a secluded region being evacuated, a local hospital stay or return travel costs to your home country.
