Although I have already travelled to Ireland a few times, the wild west of the Emerald Isle surprised me with more great spots, which were visited at the best time thanks to the very competent tour guides Jenny and Bernard. Nevertheless, the trip is not set up as a hectic journey criss-crossing the county, but also leaves enough time to relax. I also got to know lots of great cafés again :) ...and that's exactly how I imagined my holiday week would be!
My trip to Ireland, Connemara and Mayo, was my second trip with Amazing Views. This trip was accompanied by Jenny (founder and managing director of Amazing Views) and local photographer Bernard Geraghty. The very harmonious collaboration between the two, their intimate knowledge of the landscapes combined with the local weather conditions and the clear and detailed sharing of their expertise are the basis for a very successful trip. The flawless planning of the journey, local transport, the choice of hotels and lunch/dinner/coffee spots provide a great recreational value. This trip is unique due to the combination of great photo locations and the insight into Irish culture. I will be back next year and will bridge the time in between with workshops in Switzerland.
It was a varied journey that conveyed impressions of Mayo, Achill Island and Connemara. Imposing coastlines, a lighthouse, lonely fishermen's huts, a pier left to decay, (sandy) beaches, a pretty harbour town, stone walls that divide the land and at the same time give a ‘face’ to the lush green meadows with grazing sheep, to name just a few examples. Incidentally, the weather was a sky-blue colour and there was no shortage of rainbows. Bernard, the man on site, made sure that we were in the right place at the right time: Early in the morning by the mirror-smooth lake or at an exciting spot for the sunset, but also in a nice coffee house with really good coffee. Or in a restaurant with fine food. Thanks to Jenny, Bernard and Felix, I'm no longer at war with grey filters and I've acquired a taste for long exposures. I would never have thought. It's wonderful that you can always count on support. Thank you very much for all the suggestions and tips.
The trip was well organised and in my opinion we were always in the right place at the right time. The photo spots were great! Different options were sometimes offered so that everyone could choose the right one. I personally really appreciated that. Our photo guides Ralf and Bernard did a great job! They were always helpful and friendly and drove us safely to our destination, even on the long days. I learnt a lot again! The accommodation was also very comfortable, nothing to complain about. I loved Ireland and would definitely recommend the trip to others. I will certainly be travelling with Amazing Views again next time!
It was a great photo tour in a country that is a little overlooked but offers great scenic opportunities. The guides are very knowledgeable and the places we went to are great. As always, everything is perfectly organized so we only have to focus on taking pictures. Highly recommended.
You travel individually to Dublin. We will meet at Dublin Airport in the morning. We then travel north-west to County Donegal. You will spend the first night of this photo tour in Dungloe. Depending on your arrival time, you will have the opportunity to discover the unspoilt and secluded Donegal with your camera.
This region of Ireland is still off the beaten track and is a paradise for nature lovers. Look forward to wild and rugged landscapes with dark mountain lakes, idyllic country roads and a winding coastline with impressive cliffs and beautiful sandy beaches.
We will put together the exact daily programme of our trip on-site at short notice in order to be able to respond to the respective weather and light conditions. On this trip, you will mainly be travelling at sunrise and sunset.
Thanks to the small group size, we can cater to your individual needs and discuss photographic topics of your choice and put them into practice straight away (e.g. long exposures, use of filters, photography at night, etc.). We will also have time for image reviews or image editing tutorials.
After breakfast and check-out, you will travel from Dungloe to the ferry harbour in Magheroarty. The ferry will take you to a unique island paradise in just over an hour.
Tory Island is the most remote of Ireland’s inhabited islands and a photographer’s paradise. Here you will find steep cliffs, rolling hills and breathtaking views of the wild Atlantic Ocean. The car-free island is a natural paradise that you can discover on foot.
We will take you to the best photo spots on the island so that you can take stunning photos of this secluded and unique jewel of Ireland.
After breakfast and check-out, we take the ferry back to Donegal. From our accommodation in Dungloe, you will spend the next three days photographing this wonderful region in the north-west of Ireland.
Among other things, you will discover the north-western part of the Wild Atlantic Way and take great pictures of it. The wild west coast of Ireland is the longest coastal route in the world and its section in Donegal is particularly beautiful. Nature plays the leading role here: from the impressive cliffs, imposing rock arches amidst crashing waves, picturesque lighthouses to dramatic landscapes.
A visit to Glenveagh National Park, which is reminiscent of a landscape from JRR Tolkien’s ‘Lord of the Rings’, will also be included during our stay. The highest mountain in Donegal, the majestic Mount Errigal, towers above this beautiful landscape.
The photo tour Ireland Donegal & Tory Island ends today. After checking out of the hotel, you will be driven to Dublin Airport in good time.
During the photo trip Ireland Donegal & Tory Island, you stay overnight in very good hotels which offer all amenities. As the weather in Ireland can sometimes be a little unsettled, we have consciously chosen hotels that also ensure a pleasant stay during a “rainy day”.
Our comfortable hotel is located right by the sea in Dungloe. It provides an ideal base for exploring Donegal and the fantastic photographic locations along the Wild Atlantic Way.
The hotel is decorated in a blend of modern and classic elegance. The rooms are cosy and comfortable in an elegant style and have en-suite bathrooms. The hotel offers a restaurant and a bistro. Guests also have free access to the fitness centre.
The only hotel on Tory Island is the perfect base from which to discover this wonderful island. The hotel is just a short walk from the ferry harbour.
It is comfortably furnished and all rooms are en-suite. There is also a desk, tea and coffee making facilities and a flat screen TV. A restaurant and bar round off the hotel’s facilities.
The Irish weather is always good for a surprise. Sun, clouds and rain alternate constantly. Perfect for photography! The months of April to mid-June are among the months with the most days of sunshine and are therefore considered the best time to visit Ireland. In spring, the average maximum temperature is between 8 and 15 °C.
In Ireland the weather can change very quickly. Wind, sun, rain and rarely snow can occur in both spring and autumn. We therefore recommend breathable functional clothing based on the layer principle, which transports perspiration to the outside layers without losing heat and dries quickly. Well-worn hiking shoes with an appropriate profile sole are also important. Make sure to bring rain jacket and rain trousers to keep you dry in case of rain. If you also want to take pictures from the water at the photo locations, we strongly recommend taking waterproof boots or sandals / crocs (Attention: the water can be very cold at this time of year).
The trip is not particularly physically demanding. We will undertake short hikes in County Donegal to the photo locations. On Tory Island we will be travelling exclusively on foot, as the island is car-free. The walks are not difficult, but can easily be 6-7 kilometres per day. Some of the photo locations on this photo tour Ireland Donegal & Tory Island can be a little exposed. However, if you are afraid of heights, there is always the option of taking photos from a little further back.
We will put together the exact daily programme on site at short notice in order to be able to deal with the respective weather and light conditions. To make sure you can capture shots at the right time with the right light in the golden and blue hours, we will be outside especially during the sunrise and sunset times. In between, during lunch or in the afternoon, you will have free time to take a rest, explore the surroundings or take part in photo discussions and tutorials. If fantastic weather and lighting conditions arises, we can also add another photo session in the afternoon.
Single travellers can book half of a double room. If there is no other guest who wants to share the room, the single room surcharge will apply.
We strongly advise you to purchase insurance for cancellation and return journey costs, which will be needed in the event of a secluded region being evacuated, a local hospital stay or return travel costs to your home country.
