As a special treat, we offer this Northern Lights photo tour in Iceland. The Jökulsarlon aurora photo tour follows the south coast and allows us to go aurora hunting at Jökulsarlon, in Stokksnes and in Vik. Photographing the northern lights over the glacier lagoon is a highlight for any photographer.
The focus of this trip is the Northern Lights. The daily program depends on the weather, and we decide spontaneously on the excursions. In addition to photography, we will also have plenty of time for image processing and discussing images together. We will spend the first night in Hella and the last night in Gardur. Incidentally, thanks to the Gulf Stream, temperatures in Iceland fluctuate between 5 degrees below zero and 5 degrees above zero in winter.
During the time of year of this photo tour, aurora borealis can often be observed under appropriate weather conditions.
This Iceland Aurora photo tour is the perfect opportunity to expand your portfolio with great photos of auroras and the beautiful landscape.

From September to April, the nights in Iceland are long and dark. This is the best time to see the Northern Lights. So even in the fall, you have a great chance of seeing the Northern Lights on our trips. If the sky is clear and there is enough Northern Lights activity, you can capture the magical lights on camera.
Once again, we were able to experience a fantastic photo trip that fully met our high expectations. The photo guide Peter is an absolute Iceland expert who knows the country like the back of his hand. Iceland in winter is of course a challenge in terms of weather, but we still came home with excellent pictures. On the one hand, we were lucky enough to be able to photograph beautiful auroras on several nights, but on the other hand, Peter also took us to various very beautiful photo spots during the short day (4 hours of daylight) and gave us excellent support with numerous tips on image composition. We would definitely go on a trip to Iceland with Amazing Views and Peter again.
The photo trip to Iceland was a complete success. Fantastic snowy landscapes offered countless photo opportunities. I was able to take some breathtaking shots home with me. The choice of spots was fantastic, as the guide not only had a trained eye for photography, but also shone with extensive local knowledge. This gave us access to exclusive spots that were also off the beaten track.
The photo tour "Unknown Norway" has an incredible number of photo highlights to offer. It was extremely varied and had many different subjects to offer. Thanks to the midnight sun, we were out and about a lot and were able to capture fantastic light moods with our cameras. The trip is not in the usual tourist areas of Norway and that makes it particularly attractive from my point of view. Once again, everything was superbly organized, as I am used to from my last trip with Amazing Views. Everything went very smoothly. I'm already looking forward to my next photo trip.
Thanks to the perfect photo guide with great knowledge of the location and weather, we were always in the right place at the right time and used the changing weather to our advantage. Epic locations and capricious weather made for great pictures and great experiences with thrills. The professional support and the ideal group size rounded off the harmonious overall package.
‘Unknown Norway’, this year for the first time as a photo tour in the Amazing Views programme, was very well organised and smoothly executed. The travel programme sent in advance with lots of information and detailed recommendations for packing lists and photographic equipment aroused my curiosity and expectations. In short, it was perfect: the planning and the photographic and travel support were highly professional and hitch-free. The group worked extremely well as a team and I enjoyed a great week with them. My special thanks go to Cody who generously looked after us all week, acted as a safe driver and took us to all the wonderful places I had never been before. It was my 4th photo trip with Amazing Views and once again my expectations were exceeded.
What a fantastic trip. The Faroe Islands offer incredible photo opportunities: jagged cliffs, waterfalls, blue fjords, wild and rugged coastlines and ever-changing weather and light moods. Together with the perfect organisation by Amazing Views and the friendly tour guide Jenny and Bernard, it was an unforgettable week. I would book again in a heartbeat.
The name ‘Amazing Views’ was the programme and true in every respect. From the announcement and organisation of the trip, to the choice of accommodation, the tour guide and the choice of locations, everything was perfect. Of course, the weather and the chosen time of the trip in autumn played a major role. And they went perfectly with the impeccably organised photo tour. The size of the group was very pleasant and allowed everyone to be looked after according to their individual needs. The tour participants' suggestions and wishes were also taken into account. I can recommend a photo tour with Amazing Views to the island of Senja in autumn in every respect, although basic photographic knowledge and a good level of physical fitness are an advantage.
Thanks to Jenny and Cody, despite the bad weather we were always in a place where the sun provided a great lighting mood for a short time. Jenny and Cody are a well-rehearsed team who took care of everything for us so that we could concentrate on taking pictures. The tips and tricks on image composition and editing were also very valuable. I can highly recommend the photo trip to the Lofoten Islands with Amazing Views. I'm looking forward to the next photo trip with you.
Those who are not afraid of windy, damp and cool weather will be rewarded with the most spectacular, wild and lonely coastal landscapes in Europe on the Faroe Islands. Bernard, the professional photographer and guide from Ireland who knows the Faroe Islands inside out, and Jenny Brühlmann from Amazing Views are the best guarantee that every participant will take home the maximum number of experiences and great pictures. The fact that fun is not neglected is the icing on the cake.
Do you want to experience a great trip where you can fully concentrate on taking photos and experiencing wonderful moments? Then Amazing Views is the right place for you. Everything was perfectly organised on our Lofoten trip. Jenny and Cody looked after us wonderfully throughout the whole trip. Thanks to them both, we got the best out of the most varied weather conditions. As a great bonus, I was able to meet some wonderful new colleagues during the week. To summarise: we had a wonderful time with lots of unique pictures....you guys are amazing.
Individual arrival to Keflavik. After the meeting point at the airport, we continue to our accommodation in the south of Iceland. The lookout for the Northern Lights starts of course already in the evening.
Today we drive via Vik and Kirkjubaejarklaustur to our first main destination: the Jökulsarlon glacier lagoon. Depending on the weather conditions, we will make several photo stops along the way. We will try to arrive at the glacier lagoon in time for sunset. We will then drive on to our accommodation, which is only 10 km from the lagoon.
We organize the daily schedule spontaneously on site according to the weather forecast and aurora activity. The highest priority is aurora photography at night. To do this, we go to ideal, dark locations that have no urban “light pollution”.
If aurora observations are unlikely, we take trips to the surrounding area. A variety of motifs can form ideal foregrounds for aurora pictures.
On the January tour we also do an unforgettable Ice Cave Tour on the Breidamerkur glacier. Experience the unique beauty of a natural ice cave in winter and explore hidden places in the blue ice. On the other tours you can book this tour optionally depending on the current condition and stability of the ice cave.
In addition to the Jökulsarlon glacier lagoon, we visit and photograph the Fjallsarlon lagoon and Diamond Beach. We spend the nights hunting for the Northern Lights in the surrounding area.
The distance between Hali and our next accommodation north of Höfn is only about 70 km. During the whole journey, we have a wonderful view of the foothills of the Vatnajökull glacier in good weather. We take time for several photo stops.
We stay right on the beach at Stokksnes and at the foot of the famous Vestrahorn mountain. Here we have plenty of motifs and perspectives for sunrises, sunsets and aurora nights.
The Eystrahorn, about 35 km to the north, is another possible photographic highlight if the weather and road conditions are good.
We leave Stokksnes after breakfast and drive 300 km to Vik y Myrdal. The tour takes us through various landscapes with glaciers, sandy deserts and volcanic lava fields. We will take advantage of the weather and light conditions for several photo stops along the way.
Our hotel near Vik is the ideal location for discovering and photographing some of the highlights of the south coast. These are Skogafoss, Kvernufoss, the airplane wreck, the Solheimar glacier, the Reynisdrangar cliffs, the Black Beach and the Dyrholaey peninsula. Most of these sights are also ideal for aurora photography.
During the course of the day, we drive to Keflavik. We make several photo stops on the way. At the end of the day, we have a photo review at the hotel. Today is the last opportunity to go aurora hunting.
The photo tour ends today. You will take your own transfer from the hotel to Keflavik Airport, from where you will start your individual journey home or onwards.
During the Iceland Aurora Borealis South Southeast photo tour, you will stay in hotels and guesthouses that are ideally located close to the photo spots.
On the Iceland meteorolgy and weather site you can see the current weather conditions as well as the average temperatures and total precipitation throughout the year. Safetravel warns you of current dangers regarding waves, wind and avalanches so that you can travel safely on Iceland’s roads and paths.
Auroras are a natural phenomenon. Visibility depends, among other things, on the activity of the sun and the weather (cloud cover). Auroral sightings cannot be guaranteed.
In the overview of all volcanoes in Iceland you can find more information about the characteristics, current situations and recent eruptions.
As a rule earthquakes are only felt from a magnitude value of 3 and above. If necessary, check the earthquake list for the last 7 days.
You can find out more about the history of Iceland, its language and cuisine as well as informative key data on Wikivoyage.
You have a good basic level of fitness to take part in short, moderate hikes. Depending on the weather, we will go on short, easy hikes of up to one hour.
Due to the changeable weather in Iceland, you need to be prepared for all weather conditions. We therefore recommend breathable functional clothing based on the layer principle, which transports sweat to the outside without losing heat and dries quickly.
Single travellers can book half of a double room. If there is no other guest who wants to share the room, the single room surcharge will apply.
We strongly advise you to purchase insurance for cancellation and return journey costs, which will be needed in the event of a secluded region being evacuated, a local hospital stay or return travel costs to your home country.
