Day 1: Arrival to Iceland

Individual arrival to Keflavik. After the meeting point at the airport, you continue to our accommodation in the south of Iceland. The lookout for the Northern Lights starts of course already in the evening.

Day 2: Continue along the south coast to Jökulsarlon

Today you drive via Vik and Kirkjubaejarklaustur to our first main destination: the Jökulsarlon glacier lagoon. Depending on the weather conditions, you will make several photo stops along the way. We will try to arrive at the glacier lagoon in time for sunset. You will then drive on to our accommodation, which is only 10 km from the lagoon.

Day 3 and 4: Jökulsarlon and surroundings

We spontaneously plan the day’s schedule on site according to the weather forecast and aurora activity. The highest priority is aurora photography at night. To do this, we go to ideal, dark locations that have no urban “light pollution”.

If aurora observations are unlikely, you take trips to the surrounding area. A variety of motifs can form ideal foregrounds for aurora pictures.

Depending on the current condition and stability of the ice cave at the Breidamerkur Glacier, you can optionally book the Ice Cave Tour and explore and photograph the unique beauty of the natural ice cave in winter.

In addition to the Jökulsarlon glacier lagoon, you visit and photograph the Fjallsarlon lagoon and Diamond Beach. You spend the nights hunting for the Northern Lights in the surrounding area.

Day 5: Drive from Jökulsarlon to Stokksnes

The distance between Hali and our next accommodation north of Höfn is only about 70 km. During the whole journey, you have a wonderful view of the foothills of the Vatnajökull glacier in good weather. There is sufficient time for several photo stops.

Day 6 and 7: Vestrahorn Stokksnes peninsula

You stay right on the beach at Stokksnes and at the foot of the famous Vestrahorn mountain. Here you have plenty of motifs and perspectives for sunrises, sunsets and aurora nights.

The Eystrahorn, about 35 km to the north, is another possible photographic highlight if the weather and road conditions are good.

Day 8: Drive from Höfn to Vik

You leave Stokksnes after breakfast and drive 300 km to Vik y Myrdal. The tour takes you through various landscapes with glaciers, sandy deserts and volcanic lava fields. You will take advantage of the weather and light conditions for several photo stops along the way.

Day 9 and 10: Vik and surroundings

Our hotel near Vik is the ideal location for discovering and photographing some of the highlights of the south coast. These are Skogafoss, Kvernufoss, the airplane wreck, the Solheimar glacier, the Reynisdrangar cliffs, the Black Beach and the Dyrholaey peninsula. Most of these sights are also ideal for aurora photography.

Day 11: Drive to Keflavik

During the course of the day, you drive to Keflavik. You make several photo stops on the way. At the end of the day, there is a photo review at the hotel. Today is the last opportunity to go aurora hunting.

Day 12: End of the photo tour

The photo tour ends today. You will take your own transfer from the hotel to Keflavik Airport, from where you will start your individual journey home or onwards.

For whom is this photo tour suitable?

This photo tour is aimed at both beginners and advanced photographers. You have a basic knowledge of shutter speed, aperture and ISO and are be able to set these on your camera. On this photo tour, you will be individually supervised according to your photography skills.

Weather September and March

The weather is pleasant but changeable. The average temperature is 5-12 degrees. At night it can cool down to 0-5 degrees, especially in the mountains. There is already more rain with an average of 15-20 rainy days per month. The showers are often short but heavy. Snowfall is possible at higher altitudes. Coastal fog is possible, especially in the mornings, and there is wind. Stormy gusts are also possible. The nights are already darker from September, which is perfect for northern lights.

Auroras are a natural phenomenon. Visibility depends, among other things, on the activity of the sun and the weather (cloud cover). Auroral sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Iceland’s forces of nature

Iceland is one of the most active geological regions in the world, characterized by powerful forces of nature. It is precisely these natural phenomena that make Iceland a very special travel destination. With rapidly changing weather and often dramatic lighting conditions, fantastic photos are possible. The country is known for its geothermal activity, which is visible through geysers and hot springs. Northern lights and the midnight sun make the forces of nature visible in the sky. Our local guide is very familiar with the forces of nature in Iceland. Our daily program will be adapted to the current weather conditions and our route may be changed slightly to make the most of the photo tour.

Fitness level

You have a good basic level of fitness to take part in short, moderate hikes. Depending on the weather, we will go on short, easy hikes of up to one hour.

Clothing

Due to the changeable weather in Iceland, you need to be prepared for all weather conditions. We therefore recommend breathable functional clothing based on the layer principle, which transports sweat to the outside without losing heat and dries quickly.

Half double room

Single travellers can book half of a double room. If there is no other guest who wants to share the room, the single room surcharge will apply.

Insurance

We strongly advise you to purchase insurance for cancellation and return journey costs, which will be needed in the event of a secluded region being evacuated, a local hospital stay or return travel costs to your home country.
