Slovenia is a country rich in forests – as much as 60 percent of its land area is covered by forests. The most extensive forests can be found in the south of Slovenia. Because of their remoteness and sparse population, these forests are ideal habitat for numerous animal species – including bears. An estimated 500-600 brown bears live in the region.
On this photo tour Bears Slovenia you will take photos from hides for 4-5 hours in the afternoons. Chances for photographing bears are exceptionally good. In the mornings you will explore the varied and photogenic surroundings with our local guides, with enchanting gorges, mysterious caves and idyllic lake scenery.

Once again an extraordinary trip with amazing views that is hard to beat - simply amazing! In addition to the many great bear sightings, Jenny had a well-balanced side programme for photography up her sleeve. We received excellent theoretical and practical support and motivation for a whole week. The trip was a win-win for me, thank you very much!
My third trip with Amazing Views in the meantime. As in 2019 and 2023, expectations were exceeded. Wild bears at short distances, sometimes as a mother-child group, sometimes as a single bear is not just a photographic experience. It was also worth sitting for a long time. The hides with prepared camera shots and a good field of vision make photography easy, especially after the first briefing after arriving in a bird hide. Special praise is due to the tour guide, who was always approachable and flexible. We will definitely be back!
There are two possibilities for individual arrival. You can fly from Switzerland or Germany to Ljubljana (please talk to us before booking a flight). Or you can drive with your own car directly to our accommodation in the south of Slovenia.
In the evening there will be a short introduction with tips and tricks for wildlife photography, especially for taking pictures from Hides.
During the morning, we will go on different excursions to photographically interesting destinations in the region. For example, you can take pictures in a great gorge, in an impressive cave or in the beautiful forests.
In the afternoon we will take a drive into the forest. After a short walk (about 10 – 20 minutes) we will reach one of the hides. Here we will wait for the bears, other wild animals and birds. Patience is often rewarded and you can take great pictures.
During the day there are always possibilities for picture discussions or individual coaching on photography.
An estimated 1000 bears live in the forests of Slovenia. To minimise the conflicts between bears and people living in the nearby villages, Slovenia has a long tradition of spreading a limited amount of grains in its forests. This prevents bears from searching food in the villages. The scattered food is strictly limited and is only a supplement to the food the bears seek by themselves. Some grain is scattered in front of the photo hides. This was done already long before the first photographers came to Slovenia.
The photo tour ends after breakfast. You will be driven to Ljubljana Airport in good time for your return flight.
You will stay in a comfortable and rustic Guest House in the middle of an idyllic valley. All rooms have private bathrooms with shower. Wifi is available free of charge. You will be taken care with a good full pension with home-made food.
The hides are within 10-30-minute driving distance from our guest house. All hides are in idyllic locations and are equipped with chairs and special equipment for the attachment of tripod-head or gimbal-head.
The success rate to observe bears in the wild is remarkably high. Waiting for the bears in the photo hide requires a lot of patience. However, this is almost always rewarded.
The tour does not have special demands for physical condition. We will do short hikes to the photo locations. The hides are usually within 10 – 20 minutes walking distance. We will walk through the forest and partly uphill. The paths are often uneven but not technically demanding.
The climate in Slovenia is like in Switzerland, Austria and Germany. The Slovenian Alps have a typical alpine / mountain climate. In spring and autumn sun, clouds and rain alternate constantly.
Single travellers can book half of a double room. If there is no other guest who wants to share the room, the single room surcharge will apply.
We strongly advise you to purchase insurance for cancellation and return journey costs, which will be needed in the event of a secluded region being evacuated, a local hospital stay or return travel costs to your home country.
